Meals on Wheels to Host Mayors For Meals Day on March 21st

Charlottesville, VA -- Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville-Albemarle announced today that it will be holding a Mayors For Meals Day on Wednesday, March 21st 2012 at 12 noon at the Kluge Children’s Rehabilitation Center on Ivy Road.  Mayor Satyendra Huja will be participating in the event to show his support for our community’s homebound and hungry seniors.

Meals on Wheels’ Mayors For Meals Day event on Wednesday, March 21st, will include not only a chance to speak with Mayor Huja but to speak with Meals on Wheels administrative & dietary staff as well.  Media personnel are invited to follow Mayor Satyendra Huja for part of his delivery route.

“We are excited about having Mayor Huja participate in our Mayors for Meals Day event,” said Dawn Grzegorczyk  “Our Mayor has been involved with our program since its beginning in 1977 and national Mayors for Meals Day is an excellent way to continue the relationship.”

Meals on Wheels Celebrates Millionth Meal DeliveryMillionth Meal Press Release

(Charlottesville, VA)    Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville/Albemarle will deliver its 1,000,000th meal on Tuesday, January 31st, 2012 at 11am – a milestone achievement for the local non-profit. 

At 10am on Tuesday, January 31st meal assembly will begin in the cafeteria of the Kluge Children’s Rehabilitation Center at 2270 Ivy Road in Charlottesville.  The millionth meal will be delivered by Ann Shaffer, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels since the organization was established in 1977.  Meals on Wheels board members, staff, and volunteers will be available for comment and to answer questions.  Light refreshments will be served.  Media personnel are invited to follow Ann Shaffer and cover the delivery of this special meal.

“We are so grateful to the community for making this milestone possible,” says Dawn Grzegorczyk, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels.  “With the support of our volunteers and donors, we will continue to meet the growing needs of our aging community.”

Meals on Wheels has been a vital community resource since 1977, and has experienced an increase in need for its service each year since 2002.  Currently, thirty volunteer drivers deliver a total of 240 meals each weekday.  Last year, Meals on Wheels delivered over 63,000 meals to community members unable to prepare their own meals, and largely unable to pay even a portion of the cost of those meals.
